ART (FINE ART)
A LEVEL
This dynamic and creative course offers students the opportunity to explore a wide range of artistic techniques and processes through
advanced practical workshops. These experiences help students develop technical skill, creative thinking, and personal expression.
Early projects focus on building a strong and varied portfolio, while later in the course students work more independently,
developing their own ideas into fully realised personal outcomes.
Students will explore and develop skills in:
u Painting - including watercolour, oils, and acrylic, with a focus on expressive and technical approaches.
u Drawing - using tonal techniques, pen, charcoal, and coloured pencil to build observational and imaginative skills.
u Mixed Media - combining materials and techniques such as layering, collage, stitch, and surface manipulation.
u Photography - both digital and traditional, using Photoshop and hand-manipulated editing techniques, as well as workingwith photography backdrops.
u Printmaking - including lino printing and mono printing to explore texture, pattern, and mark-making.
u 3D - working with materials such as clay to develop form, texture, and structure.
u Textiles - exploring processes like fabric manipulation, stitch techniques, and surface decoration.
u Contextual Studies - researching artists, art movements, exhibitions, and galleries to inform and inspire personal work.
The course opens doors to a wide range of creative opportunities. Fine Art is a
valuable foundation for careers in the visual arts and beyond. Past students have
progressed into fields such as illustration, animation, architecture, interior design,
fashion, graphic design, gallery curation, tattoo artistry, set design, art therapy,
photography, and fine art practice. Many also go on to study related subjects at
university or art school.
The creative industries remain one of the UK’s fastest-growing sectors,
contributing significantly to the economy and offering diverse and exciting
career paths.
Course Specific Entry Requirements:
Due to the skill-based nature of the course, it is a requirement that you have
achieved a grade 5 or above in GCSE art, photography, or textiles, or hold an
equivalent visual arts-based course. However, a varied portfolio of work with
evidence of strong drawing and creative skill would be considered in the
absence of an Art & Design GCSE or equivalent.

ART & DESIGN (PHOTOGRAPHY)
A LEVEL
Photography is a fast paced and exciting course which challenges students to explore the aesthetic, intellectual and technical aspects of
photography. In an ever-developing digital society it is a course which opens pathways into a multitude of digital industries including media,
film and visual arts and provides students with strong critical and analytical communication and independent project management skills
sought by many top employers.
Photography develops students’ creativity through a programme of study
spanning critical, practical, and theoretical skills. Students are encouraged
to investigate the different styles, genres and approaches to photography
including some chemical, digital and studio photography.
Students will be expected to plan, resource, and organise their own
photo shoots, therefore the ability to work independently is a key skill for
success on this course. Observing, refining, analysing, and taking
experimental risks are also key factors of the course.
Course Specific Entry Requirements:
